Despite advancements in digital technology, a significant digital divide persists, particularly among marginalized groups such as women market traders. During the process of identifying and collecting data on women traders in markets, Equality for Growth (EfG) recognized this gap and committed to taking concrete action.
The creation of EfG’s mobile application is a pivotal step towards bridging this divide and enhancing the capacity of women traders to fully participate in the digital economy. By providing a user-friendly digital platform, EfG aims to empower women traders to access vital resources, build networks, and strengthen their entrepreneurial capabilities.
In Tanzania, while digital innovation has grown rapidly, women’s participation in the digital space remains limited. For instance, data from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) show that mobile subscriptions increased from 23.81 million in 2018 to 34.47 million by September 2023, reflecting significant technological growth. However, women, particularly in informal sectors, still lag behind in reaping the benefits of these advancements.
EfG’s mobile application now boasts 1,024 active users, demonstrating its growing reach and impact. It is designed to serve as a catalyst for change, encouraging women traders to embrace digital platforms. Furthermore, EfG seeks to inspire women to move beyond informal markets and explore participation in formal investment opportunities, such as listed companies, where their presence remains minimal.
To address these disparities effectively, we believe in holistic support. Alongside the app, efforts must focus on providing digital skills training, mentorship programs, and access to financial resources. These initiatives are crucial for equipping women traders with the knowledge and tools to excel in an increasingly digital world.
By fostering inclusion through technology, EfG is driving meaningful change and ensuring women traders are not left behind in Tanzania’s digital transformation.
